A fall on the ice during a weekly hockey game left him with a spinal cord injury, taking away his ability to walk. In the days and weeks that followed, he faced an uncertain future—one filled with challenges that seemed insurmountable.

But Steve was not alone. At the Stan Cassidy Centre for Rehabilitation (SCCR), he discovered a dedicated team of experts and cutting-edge technology—resources that would empower him on his rehabilitation journey. One of the most powerful tools in his recovery? The EksoNR Robotic Exoskeleton.

“When I first arrived at Stan Cassidy, I had no movement in my legs or forearms,” Steve recalls. “I saw someone using the exoskeleton in the gym and thought, ‘I hope I can try that one day.’”

Thanks to the generosity of donors, that day came. With the support of his physiotherapists, Steve strapped into the suit and took his first steps. What seemed impossible only months before became reality—he was standing and walking again.

“It was liberating,” Steve says. “For the first time since my accident, I was on my feet, taking steps. Every time I use the exoskeleton, I feel stronger, more confident.”

Over time, the exoskeleton has helped Steve regain mobility, increase his stamina, and improve his gait. His determination, combined with cutting-edge rehabilitation, has transformed his recovery journey.

“This place is part of my life now,” Steve says. “I’ve been coming here weekly for six years, and I’ve seen firsthand the impact of donor support. Without it, this technology wouldn’t be here to help people like me.”

The purchase of the exoskeleton—made possible through donations to the Chalmers Foundation—ensures that more patients like Steve have access to world-class rehabilitation right here in New Brunswick. It’s more than a piece of equipment; it’s a second chance, a renewed sense of possibility, and a reminder that with the right support, anything is possible.

Steve’s story is a testament to resilience, hope, and the power of community. Because of donors like you, people facing some of the toughest challenges of their lives have the tools they need to keep moving forward.
